Film Music Fridays

Film Music Friday - October 8, 2021 (The Chase - rebroadcast)

From silent comedies to modern action blockbusters, cinema has always thrived on the thrill of the chase. Catch your breath and join us for this week's Film Music Friday when we hear excerpts from some classic films, including The 39 Steps, North by Northwest, Catch Me If You Can, The Fugitive, The Bourne Ultimatum and more.

Film Music Friday - October 1, 2021 (Alex North)

One of the most renowned film composers of the 20th century, Alex North created music for more than 60 major motion pictures, including A Streetcar Named Desire (the first all-jazz movie score), Death of a Salesman, Spartacus, Cleopatra and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?.  We'll hear excerpts from those films, as well as North's rejected score for 2001: A Space Odyssey on this week's Film Music Friday.

Film Music Friday - September 24, 2021 (The Theremin in Film Music)

This week on Film Music Friday it's an encore broadcast of our show featuring the theremin in movies. It became a staple of sci-fi movies in the '50s, but the theremin has appeared in lots of other films besides. Tonight we'll hear the FIRST use of a theremin in a film score, plus excerpts from The Lost Weekend, Spellbound, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Thing, First Man and more.

Film Music Friday - September 10, 2021 (Maurice Jarre)

In a career that stretched to more than 50 years, Maurice Jarre provided music for films like Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, The Longest Day, The Man Who Would Be King, Fatal Attraction and Ghost. Along the way he was Oscar-nominated nine times and won three Academy Awards. On this week's Film Music Friday we'll explore the career of Maurice Jarre, with excerpts from all of his Oscar-winning films and more.

Film Music Friday - September 3, 2021 (The Modern Westerns)

This week on Film Music Friday we're revisiting the western. Following World War II, the western evolved from the traditional shoot 'em up to a more realistic, nuanced and often more violent style. We'll hear music from modern westerns like Tombstone, Dances With Wolves, Silverado and The Magnificent Seven (the 2016 remake).
