Film Music Fridays

Film Music Friday - July 8, 2022 (Films of Humphrey Bogart)

Once typecast in gangster roles, Humphrey Bogart eventually transcended his status as a movie star to become an international cultural icon. This week on Film Music Friday we'll hear some memorable themes from Bogart's films, including Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The Caine Mutiny and more.

Film Music Friday - June 24, 2022 (Epic Films)

The dictionary defines "epic" as something that's heroic, majestic, impressively great.  In Hollywood an epic is a movie that's big - really big.  And a big movie needs big music.  This week's Film Music Friday examines the music of epic films, with examples from Ben-Hur, King Kong, The Sea Hawk, The Man Who Would Be King and The Avengers, among others.

Film Music Friday - June 17, 2022 (Science Fiction)

On this week's Film Music Friday we're hearing the Golden Age of the Science Fiction. Our fascination with the future has made science fiction a staple of the cinema since silent movies. From space invaders and forbidden planets to time travel, sentient robots and atomic mutations run amok, almost anything is possible in the science fiction film. We'll hear music from Metropolis, Things to Come, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Destination Moon and more!

Film Music Friday - June 10, 2022 (Carter Burwell)

Carter Burwell didn't aspire to become a composer, much less a film composer.  However, filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen gave him an opportunity to write the score for their first film, Blood Simple, in 1994 and he went on to write music for most of the Coen brothers' films.  On this week's Film Music Friday we'll hear Burwell's music from Fargo; Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri; True Grit; The Big Lebowski and more.

Film Music Friday - May 20, 2022 (Dimitri Tiomkin)

For a Russian composer who never quite mastered the English language, Dimitri Tiomkin wrote some of the most American-sounding music in films.  This week on Film Music Friday we'll hear examples of the Tiomkin sound, with music from Lost Horizon, Red River, It's a Wonderful Life, Giant, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and more.
