Commemorating 200 Years of the Santa Fe Trail - Part 7 (Border Ruffians & Fort Union)

Those of us who live along the Kansas/Missouri border are familiar with the struggles that took place here in the years prior to the American Civil war. In today's episode of our series about the Santa Fe Trail, we hear about John Brown, the "Border Ruffians" and Fort Union from Marian Sloan Russell, who wrote about them in her memoirs. The words of Marian Russell are read here by actress Lindsay Wagner. (Yes, the Bionic Woman!)

This story is part of a larger documentary project about the Santa Fe Trail. Learn more at PrairieHollow.net or check out the Facebook page for Prairie Hollow Productions. Dave Kendall is the producer and narrator of the documentary.

J. Schafer is the News Director of Kansas Public Radio. He’s also the Managing Editor of the Kansas Public Radio Network, which provides news and information to other public radio stations in Kansas and Missouri.
