More than a dozen detainees could be transferred out of the facility next month. Jenkins is concerned that might signal closure of the facility is coming.

The Pentagon sent President Obama a $600 million proposal for closing the facility that he rejected due to cost. Representative Jenkins says he should have accepted it.

The measure is seen as largely symbolic intended to give granting Jenkins and other opponents an opportunity to state their claims that President Obama’s plans for transferring Guantanamo prisoners to the U.S. are illegal and unconstitutional.

US Senator Pat Roberts and Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins both joined fellow Republicans in opposing the agreement.
