Commemorating 200 Years of the Santa Fe Trail - Part 5 (Josiah Gregg)

Independence, Missouri, and Council Grove, Kansas, occupy prominent positions in the history associated with the westward expansion of the United States. As we continue our monthly series commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Santa Fe Trail, we follow the trail from Independence to Council Grove with Josiah Gregg, the author of a book titled Commerce of the Prairies. Originally published in 1844, Gregg's account of his experiences on the trail prompted others to become involved with the Santa Fe trade. Dave Kendall, of Prairie Hollow Productions, produced this piece for us. Kansas Public Radio's J. Schafer narrates excerpts from Josiah Gregg's book.

This story is part of a larger documentary project about the Santa Fe Trail. Learn more at PrairieHollow.net or check out the Facebook page for Prairie Hollow Productions. Dave Kendall is the producer of the documentary. He will also serve as the Master of Ceremonies for the next Symphony in the Flint Hills, scheduled for June 12, just outside of Council Grove.

J. Schafer is the News Director of Kansas Public Radio. He’s also the Managing Editor of the Kansas Public Radio Network, which provides news and information to other public radio stations in Kansas and Missouri.
