Statehouse

KPR opened its first full-time Statehouse Bureau in Topeka in January of 1978. Ever since, KPR's Statehouse Bureau, which is often called the KPR-Network, has provided gavel-to-gavel coverage of the legislature, executive and judicial branches of Kansas government and other stories of statewide interest. KPR is the only broadcast outlet in the state that maintains a full-time, year-round bureau at the Capitol.

A new secretary took over the Kansas Department for Children and Families this month. Her first priority: shoring up the overburdened foster care system.  Gina Meier-Hummel, the new administrator of the state’s social welfare agency, is now receiving daily reports about kids who’ve run away from their foster homes and how many are sleeping in offices awaiting a place to stay.  Hear more from the new KDCF secretary in this interview.
