On this edition of Conversations, I talk with Shelly Westerhausen about her cookbook, Vegetarian Heartland: Recipes for Life's Adventures. Growing up in small town Indiana had a heavy influence on Westerhausen's approach to vegetarian cuisine. When she started eating a vegetarian diet, she adapted her family recipes and familiar Midwest dishes to be meatless. Her cookbook features 100 recipes for everything from drinks to desserts, including Kansas Barbeque Tempeh Skewers. The book is arranged by seasons and activities, including food for picnics and cooking over an open fire while camping. In addition to the recipes, Westerhausen shares personal insights into why she values living in the Midwest, and illustrates her points with scenic pictures from Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and beyond. Of course, there are also mouthwatering pictures of food! Shelly Westerhausen is a recipe developer, photographer and creator of the blog Vegetarian Ventures.
