Hundreds of students from nearby Topeka High School marched to the Statehouse during the nationwide school walkout Wednesday against gun violence. As Stephen Koranda reports for the Kansas News service, the march comes a month after a Florida school shooting that left 17 people dead.
The students filled a huge staircase outside the Kansas Statehouse, holding signs saying “never again” and asking “am I next?”
Sixteen-year-old Brenna Allen-Snyder said she understands 2nd Amendment gun rights, but she thinks lawmakers should ban certain types of weapons.
“It’s one thing to protect your amendments, but it’s another thing to have weapons that are meant simply just to kill people as fast as possible,” Allen-Snyder said.
She said her generation will act when it’s in charge if politicians don’t make changes now.
