A Kansas advocacy group is working to introduce a bill during the legislative session to legalize medical marijuana. The group, calling itself Bleeding Kansas, is made up of patients with various illnesses who say they would benefit from medical marijuana and citizens who support their cause. Lisa Ash Sublett is the group's president. She says medical pot is often a good substitute for opiate-based medications that have many side effects including long-term addiction and are often prescribed for babies and small children.
Sublett says the group is working with sympathetic lawmakers who intend to introduce the "Cannabis Compassionate Care Act" during this year's legislative session. The group's website says a recent poll shows 68 percent of Kansans support legalization of medical marijuana.
