State lawmakers will get back to work this morning, still looking for a fix for the more than $400 million dollar gap in the state budget for the coming fiscal year. House members rejected a proposal last week to raise the state’s overall sales tax. Republican leaders of the House tax panel say the next proposal will likely include a somewhat smaller sales tax hike combined with a rollback of some income tax cuts for business. But Democratic Representative Kathy Wolf Moore, of Kansas City, says she still doesn’t see how that will add up to enough revenue to bridge such a large budget gap.
A few lawmakers have suggested the state could make across the board cuts to all state agencies to eliminate the $406 million shortfall. Tax committees in both the House and Senate meet today to explore more options to fix the shortfall.
