Dodge City School Officials Say Bond Issue Won't Cover Losses

The State Board of Education will be meeting next week  to consider giving some Kansas school districts the authority to hold bond elections to recoup some of the money they expect to lose under the state's new school funding plan.  If voters approve, the districts would issue a total of $260 million in bonds. But Dodge City School Superintendent Alan Cunningham says the bonds won't provide enough money to compensate for the loss of state funding.

Last month Governor Sam Brownback signed a law overhauling the way the state distributes funding to schools. Districts will lose an estimated $51 million they expected to receive for the current school year.
