Two Republican state lawmakers are criticizing a ballot measure in Wichita over reducing marijuana penalties. Representative Representatives Steve Brunk and Mark Kahrs say the referendum, scheduled for a vote tomorrow, is illegal. Brunk points to an opinion from Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt.
The ballot measure would make first-time possession a misdemeanor infraction with a $50 fine in Wichita. Brunk held a news conference with several other state and local officials where they advised Wichita to take its fight to the state level. Wichita officials say the measure’s supporters collected enough signatures to put the question on the ballot and say they have no choice but to hold the referendum.
