In Session: Filling the Kansas Budget Hole

Last week, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback ordered new funding cuts for public schools and state universities. At the same time, the Legislature passed an emergency stop-gap measure designed to close a growing gap in the state budget. Kansas government is running low on money and without these actions, officials say the state won't be able to pay its bills on time. Filling the budget hole. That's the focus of this week's "In Session," our report on what's happening at the Kansas Statehouse. KPR's J. Schafer spoke with Statehouse reporter Stephen Koranda and Jim McLean, of the KHI News Service, to learn more.

This is a joint effort between Kansas Public Radio and the Kansas Health Institute. Based in Topeka, the Kansas Health Institute is a nonprofit, nonpartisan health policy and research organization focused on issues that impact the health of Kansans. The Kansas Health Institute was established in 1995 with a multiyear grant from the Kansas Health Foundation. The foundation made the commitment based on its conclusion that health policy decisions often were based on fragmented, anecdotal and sometimes biased information.
