Sarah Smarsh: Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth

Sarah Smarsh and KPR's Kaye McIntyre

Week of September 30, 2018: A conversation with Sarah Smarsh of Wichita, author of the acclaimed "Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on the Earth." Smarsh's memoir was released just two weeks ago and has already been long-listed for the National Book Award. We'll also hear how 1991's Summer of Mercy shaped Kansas politics for decades to come in Episode 2 of "My Fellow Kansans" from the Kansas News Service.

Kaye starts her weekends the same way you do: with Weekend Edition, Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!, This American Life, and The Moth Radio Hour. She started at Kansas Public Radio in 2001; in 2006, she became the producer of our weekly public affairs program, KPR Presents, which changed its name in 2025 to Prairie Journal. In her spare time, she loves to read, travel, and attend theater.
