  • Kansas Sees 1st Case of West Nile Virus This YearTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas health officials say an adult from Atchison County has the state's first case of West Nile virus this year. They say a mosquito sample in Sedgwick County has also tested positive for West Nile. There were 57 cases of West Nile virus in Kansas in 2012.==========Court Upholds Beating Death ConvictionTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas Supreme Court has upheld a Lawrence woman's conviction in a beating death. Shanna Friday's attorney said a prosecutor's comment strayed from evidence, but the court called the comment a "harmless error." Friday was sentenced to about 14 years in 2008 for the death of Jerry Deshazer.==========Arrest Made in Junction City StabbingJUNCTION CITY, Kan. (AP) — Junction City authorities have arrested a man suspected of stabbing four people early yesterday. Two of the victims appeared to have serious wounds, while the other two suffered minor injuries. The suspect was being held on aggravated battery charges.=========Topeka Zoo Wins Appeals in Gazelle DeathTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The Topeka Zoo has won its appeal of a citation the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued after a gazelle died at the zoo in December. A letter from USDA Western Region director Robert Gibbens said the agency lacked documents to counter the appeal.
  • Singaporean national Saridewi Djamani, 45, was convicted in 2018 of trafficking over 30 grams of heroin. She is first woman to be hanged since 2004.
  • The Wall Street Journal reporter and the former U.S. Marine have been released by Russia in exchange for Russian prisoners held in the U.S. and Europe, in what the U.S. calls a historic prisoner swap.
  • The Pentagon says it has charged six detainees at Guantanamo Bay with murder in connection with the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The men will become the first Guantanamo prisoners to face trial. And if they're convicted, they could receive the death penalty. The six include Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the alleged mastermind.

Woolley cited a U.S. Supreme Court ruling when issuing his decision in the case of Anson Bernhardt. Prosecutors say they will move forward with plans to empanel a new jury in the case.=====KU Frat Fined in Turkey IncidentLAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — A University of Kansas fraternity has been punished for abusing a turkey. Beta Theta Pi members will pay a $5,000 fine and do community service. Witnesses said fraternity members chased and choked the bird at a party last year and broke its wing and a leg. Police say they were told one member then killed the turkey.=====Two Killed in KC-Area CrashKansas City, MO. (AP) - A fiery crash has claimed two lives. The Jackson County, Missouri, sheriff's department says a vehicle apparently was speeding before it crashed early yesterday (SAT) in the eastern part of the county. The Kansas City Star reports that the vehicle came to rest upside down and off the road. Firefighters rushed to the scene and extinguished the fire. The identities of the two people found inside weren't immediately released.===== Body Near in Platte County, MO PLATTE CITY, Mo. (AP) — Authorities are investigating the discovery of a body north of Weston in Platte County. The Kansas City Star reports that that the body was found Friday, but authorities didn't know how long it had been there. No other details were available.Authorities are still seeking to identify another body found Thursday on the Platte County side of the Missouri River near Interstate 435. The body was that of a man and had tattoos of a four-leaf clover and the letters "Ca."
