The Republican governor announced the proclamation Monday, saying the holiday season is a time when families and friends celebrate traditions. He encouraged Kansans to "consider the importance of reconciliation and forgiveness." Brownback has issued similar proclamations since being elected governor in 2010. He says forgiveness is a sign of strength and that reaching out to others who may have caused pain in the past is a way to build a bridge.

(AP) _ The Topeka City Council has approved two ordinances aimed at reducing discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in that city. The council approved a measure yesterday establishing a domestic partnership registry for same-sex and opposite-sex couples. The second ordinance would ban the city from discrimination in hiring based on gender identity. The measure also requires the city of Topeka to provide health coverage for any city employees registered with the city as being part of a domestic partnership. The council chamber was full for the meeting, with residents speaking for and against each of the proposals.
  • (Photo Credit: dosomething.org)WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ Summer showed up early in Wichita. The city baked under 102 degree temperatures yesterday (SUN). The National Weather Service says it's the earliest the temperature ever broke the 100 degree mark in the city. The previous record for May 4 was 94 degrees, set in 1963. It's also the earliest day in the year the city went over 100. The previous record was May 9, 2011. The heat caused widespread power outages in Sedgwick County. Westar Energy says about 12,000 customers lost power Sunday.

Riley County Police Officer Matt Droge (DROH-ghee) says the accident occurred Sunday afternoon.No one on the boat was wearing a life jacket when the accident occurred. Mann's body was recovered around 10:30 last (SUN) night. The other two people on the boat were treated at an area hospital and released.
