Topeka-based Payless ShoeSource has announced that the company is cutting 165 jobs. The layoffs will affect more than 100 workers in Topeka. Payless spokeswoman Meghan Spreer says the layoffs were necessary to keep the retailer competitive.
Spreer says employees who were laid off all received what she describes as "fair" severance packages. Payless has more than 4,000 stores in 30 countries. Reuters reported earlier this month that Payless was working to restructure more than $600 million in debt.
