Kansas Officials: No Guantanamo Detainees at Leavenworth

U.S. Congressman Mike Pompeo of Kansas
U.S. Congressman Mike Pompeo of Kansas

Kansas officials have sent President Obama a letter protesting the possible move of detainees from Guantanamo Bay to the military prison at Fort Leavenworth.  All six members of the Kansas congressional delegation, state lawmakers, local officials and Governor Sam Brownback signed the letter saying that moving terror suspects to Kansas would jeopardize families, schools and local businesses. The letter originated in a town hall meeting convened by Republican US Representatives Lynn Jenkins and Mike Pompeo. Pompeo says the group felt it was important to let the President know where the community stands on the proposal.

Earlier this year, the Defense Department surveyed several potential sites for housing the detainees in Colorado, South Carolina and the maximum security military prison at Fort Leavenworth.
