U.S. Representatives Hold Gitmo Town Hall in Leavenworth

Congressman Mike Pompeo of Kansas' 4th District
Congressman Mike Pompeo of Kansas' 4th District

Two members of Congress from Kansas are holding a town hall meeting in Leavenworth this morning to discuss the possible transfer of detainees from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The meeting is being hosted by Republican Representatives Lynn Jenkins and Mike Pompeo. President Obama is working to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay and the military prison at Fort Leavenworth is among several sites being considered for relocating the detainees. Congressman Pompeo says he and Jenkins want to explain the current situation and hear the concerns of people in Leavenworth.

The Fort Leavenworth Army post is home to the country's only maximum security military prison. The City of Leavenworth recently posted a message on its website stating that the City Commission opposes the transfer of terrorist detainees to the prison at Fort Leavenworth.
