Obama to Give Prime-Time Address Sunday
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama will address the nation from the Oval Office Sunday in prime time about steps the government is taking to keep people safe after the attack last week in San Bernardino, California. The White House says that during the 8 pm address Obama will provide an update on the attack that killed 14 and wounded 21, and will also discuss the broader threat of terrorism. He will talk about the nature of the threat, how it has evolved and how he plans to defeat it. Obama will talk more about his determination that the Islamic State group must be destroyed. And he will make the case that the United States must draw on the nation's values — its commitment to justice, equality and freedom — to prevail.

Construction Disagreements Delay Fort Riley Hospital Opening
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says disagreements between the construction contractor and the government over final inspections of Fort Riley's new hospital sparked the latest delay in its opening. But the contractor who built the hospital said Friday it is working to complete items that have no bearing on the hospital's opening. The hospital was originally set to open in 2012 to replace Irwin Army Community Hospital, the oldest Army hospital in the nation. Now a planned opening in mid-January has been scrapped. Political pressure is building to finish the work — even if that means issuing new construction contracts to get it done. Senator Jerry Moran says he is meeting with the Corps this month to determine what it will take to get the hospital up and running.

Armed Teen Shot While Fleeing Police
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ Wichita police say a teenager was in critical condition after being shot by police as he ran with a gun toward the doors of a high school where a girls' basketball game was being played. The Wichita Eagle reports the teen fled after police pulled over a pickup truck that was pulling into the West High School parking lot around 6:30 pm Friday. Deputy Police Chief Hassan Ramzah says there were four people in the truck, and one got out with a handgun and started running toward the south doors of the school. Ramzah says multiple shots were fired at the teen after he ignored verbal warnings to stop and got closer to the door. He was taken to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis in critical condition.

High School Psychologist Arrested for Marijuana Possession
SALINA, Kan. (AP) _ A Kansas high school psychologist is in custody after more than 14 pounds of marijuana were found in the trunk of her car as she and her husband returned from Colorado. The Wichita Eagle reports 46-year-old Shelly Moore and 44-year-old Frank Moore were arrested early Thursday after a Saline County deputy pulled the couple over on Interstate 135 just south of Salina.

Emporia State Football Season Ends in NCAA Division II National Quarterfinals
Northwest Missouri ended Emporia State's run in the NCAA Division II football playoffs. The Bearcats never trailed in their 38-17 victory over the Hornets, whose season ended with a record of 11-3. Two of the three Hornets' losses were against Northwest Missouri.

K-State, Georgia St Wins Mean No More Than 3 5-7 Bowl Teams
MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State earned its bowl bid on the field and the biggest win in Georgia State history means one less team with a 5-7 in the postseason. Championship Saturday began with 75 bowl-eligible teams and only three more that could get there. Kansas State took care of business by beating West Virginia 24-23 to finish 6-6. Georgia State, in its sixth season playing Division I football, beat Sun Belt Conference rival Georgia Southern 34-7 for its sixth victory. South Alabama was playing Appalachian State on Saturday night trying to become the 78th team with at least six wins and a .500 record. The NCAA approved a plan earlier in the week to fill bowls in need with 5-7 teams based on their Academic Progress Ratings. Nebraska was tops among those teams.
