Topeka Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for Officer's Death

The man who pleaded guilty to killing Topeka Police Corporal Jason Harwood last year will spend the rest of his life in prison. Ross Preston Lane was sentenced Friday to life in prison without parole for the September 2014 death of the 40-year-old officer. Harwood was shot three times after stopping Lane's car for speeding. Lane avoided the death penalty by pleading guilty but Deputy District Attorney Jackie Spradling (SPRAWD-ling) said he will never be released from custody. “The capital murder conviction carries the sentence of life without the possibility of parole." Spradling said. "In the end, what that means is that he’ll never get out of prison.” About 50 law enforcement officers packed the courtroom during Lane's sentencing, as Harwood's family and friends spoke to the jury about the impact of his death.
