The University of Kansas has received its largest private donation ever - $58 million. KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little announced the gift today (TUE) from the estate of Al and Lila Self.
"The Selfs have given the largest, single gift that we've ever received from an individual. This gift, in combination with what they've given before, totals 106 million dollars," the chancellor said.
KU alumni Al and Lila Self died last year, both at the age of 91. The largest part of the couple's $58 million gift will be used for graduate fellowships. Including today's (TUE) gift, the school's "Far Above" fundraising campaign has exceeded its original goal and now totals more than $1.2 billion.

The University of Kansas is still reeling from news of a major private donation. This week, school officials announced a $58 million dollar bequest from the estate of Al and Lila Self, two KU alumni. It's the largest, single contribution ever made by individuals to the school. Al and Lila Self met as KU students in the 1940s and later got married. The couple died last year, both at the age of 91. KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little said the $58 million from the Self family wasn't their first gift to KU. All told, during the past 20 years, the couple contributed more than $106 million.
