FBI Investigates Fatality as Possible Hate Crime
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City police have confirmed that an SUV involved in the death of a teenager outside a Somali community center Thursday had an anti-Muslim message displayed in the rear window at the time of the crash. Authorities say 34-year-old Ahmed Aden deliberately ran the boy over and have charged him with murder in a case that the FBI is investigating as a potential hate crime.
Gun Manufacturer Settles Lawsuit
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Gun manufacturer Remington Arms Company and plaintiffs in two class-action lawsuits have agreed to a settlement under which the company will replace triggers in millions of guns. Under the settlement agreement filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Remington says it will replace X-Mark Pro triggers on Model 700 and Model Seven bolt action rifles.
Mental Health Workers Fear Limits May End in Patients' Arrests
OSAWATOMIE, Kan. (AP) A new Kansas policy that limits the number of psychiatric patients addmitted at Osawatomie State Hospital has some mental health workers concerned that patients could end up in jails instead of hospital beds. The Kansas City Star reports the policy was initiated this week after federal regulators threatened to cut off Meicare and Medicaid funds to the hospital if it doesn't fix its overcrowding problems by February 13th.
Wichita Minister Threatened after Same-Sex Wedding
A Wichita minister says she is starting to become frightened by a growing number of death threats she has received since performing a wedding ceremony for 15 same-sex couples. The Reverend Jackie Carter is pastor of the First Metropolitan Community Church. She married the couples on the steps on the Sedgwick County Courthouse last month. She says some of the threats have been reported to police.
