Kansas Students Stage School Walkout; Part of Nationwide Protest Against Gun Violence

As part of a nationwide protest against gun violence, students across Kansas walked out of class at 10 o'clock this (WED) morning. They stood in silence for 17 minutes to honor the 17 students killed a month ago today during a school shooting in Parkland, Florida. As part of the protest, three students at Lawrence's Free State High School performed a so-called "slam song," a kind of poem read out loud.

Across town, at Lawrence High School, students and some parents staged their own protest. Similar events were held at other schools in Kansas and across the country.
