Kansas River Keeper Works to Protect and Preserve 173 Miles of Water

DeSoto resident Dawn Buehler grew up right next to the Kansas River, where she took advantage of all the outdoor activities she could -- swimming, boating, camping. Her lifelong affection for the Kaw, coupled with her love of wildlife, likely led to the job title she holds today: Kansas River Keeper. Buehler and some friends spent part of the summer paddling down the entire length of the Kaw. KPR's J. Schafer caught up with her -- where else -- but along the banks of the Kansas River.

That's Kansas River Keeper Dawn Buehler, who also serves as the Executive Director of the Friends of the Kaw. She was speaking with KPR's J. Schafer. To learn more about the Kansas River and the Friends of the Kaw, visit KansasRiver.org

Editor's note: The Merc Co-Op in Lawrence selected Friends of the Kaw as the recipient for this month's " Change for Our Community" program. For the rest of August, Merc shoppers can round up the cost of their purchases and have the extra change donated to the Friends of the Kaw

J. Schafer is the News Director of Kansas Public Radio. He’s also the Managing Editor of the Kansas Public Radio Network, which provides news and information to other public radio stations in Kansas and Missouri.
