Brownback Signs Bill on Emissions Reduction Plan

Governor Sam Brownback signed a bill today (THUR) requiring the state’s health agency to work with utility regulators and lawmakers to draft a plan for reducing emissions from coal-fired power plants. The federal Environmental Protection Agency is preparing to set new limits on emissions. But Brownback says the state should be allowed to decide how it wants to meet the stricter standards.

Brownback says the state is prepared to push back against the new regulations if they are too expensive or force Kansas utilities to idle power plants needed to meet customer demand for electricity.
