K-State Scientists Develop Bird Flu Vaccine

Last year’s avian influenza outbreak killed millions of birds, cost the U.S. poultry industry billions and drove up the price of poultry products at the grocery store. Now, a team of researchers at Kansas State University say they have developed an effective vaccine for the bird flu virus. Dr. Jurgen Richt says the vaccine protects against multiple strains of bird flu.

Richt developed the vaccine with Dr. Wenjun (When-june) Ma (Maw). The scientists say the new drug will allow poultry producers to conduct mass inoculation through water or food sources and will give the poultry industry a new defense for combating the disease.
