Custer's Trials: New Book Explores George Custer's Time in Kansas

George Armstrong Custer is famous for the Battle of the Little Big Horn, but there's a lot you might not know about him. You can read about Custer's adventures in Kansas in a new book called Custer's Trials. This photograph depicts a buffalo hunt along the Big Timber River, south of Hays, Kansas. Some more well-known members of the hunting party include Custer, Hill P. Wilson, Captain Tom Custer and General Samuel D. Sturgis, 1869. Kansas history is full of interesting figures, not the least of which is George Armstrong Custer. He's famous for the Battle of the Little Big Horn. But there's a lot about him you might not know. A new book reveals much about Custer's adventures (and misadventures) right here in Kansas. Commentator Rex Buchanan has this of the book, Custer's Trials.

Commentator Rex Buchanan is the interim director of the Kansas Geological Survey at the University of Kansas. He's also an avid reader. The book he reviewed today is called Custer's Trials: A Life on the Frontier of a New America, by T.J. Stiles.
