Here in the Midwest, The Great Depression of the 1930s coincided with the years of the Dust Bowl. Sometimes called "the Dirty Thirties," it was time when massive dust storms rolled across the prairie -- bringing misery, starvation and financial ruin to much of the Great Plains. This weekend, PBS will broadcast a documentary on the subject. Commentator Rex Buchanan says the film should be of interest to all Kansans, especially in light of the devastating drought from this past summer.
Commentator Rex Buchanan is the Interim Director of the Kansas Geological Survey at the University of Kansas and a regular contributor to Kansas Public Radio. He's also the co-author of the book "Roadside Kansas."
