The chair of the Kansas House Tax Committee is responding to claims from Democrats about the tax plan passed by the Legislature last weekend. The Republican-dominated Legislature passed a bill that will cut income tax rates, but will also keep the sales tax elevated and reduce income tax deductions. As KPR’s Stephen Koranda tells us, the chair of the Kansas Democratic Party says that amounts to a more than $750 million tax increase.

The chair of the Kansas House Tax Committee is responding to some Democrats' claims about the tax plan passed by the Legislature last weekend. Lawmakers passed a bill that will cut income tax rates, but will also keep the sales tax elevated and reduce income tax deductions. The chair of the state Democratic Party says that amounts to a tax increase of more than $750 million in the coming years. Republican Richard Carlson is the top tax negotiator in the House.
Carlson says that the new tax bill...in conjunction with last year's tax cut...yields a net tax decrease.
