The Kansas House has revived a plan that would implement a controversial voter registration requirement this year. Lawmakers have already approved a law requiring first-time voters in Kansas to prove their citizenship with a birth certificate or other document, but that’s not slated to take effect until 2013. The House voted to move that date up to June of this year. Scott Schwab, an Olathe Republican, says now is the time to implement the new rule.
Opponents argue that the June date doesn't leave enough time before the primary election to implement a new rule. They also say the change will make it difficult for some people to register to vote. The House is likely to take final action on the bill tomorrow (WED).
