(AP) — Kansas City, Kansas police are investigating an apparent stabbing death. Police said officers responded yesterday (SAT) morning to reports of a stabbing and found a woman in her 40s dead. A man identified as a person of interest was found about a block away from the scene and was taken in for questioning. The identity of the victim wasn't immediately released.==========Wichita Fatality Involves Pedestrian, Cars, HorseWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Wichita police say a 49-year-old man has died after being struck by two vehicles while crossing a road with a horse and a 6-year-old boy. The Wichita Eagle reports that the first vehicle fled after the collision. The second vehicle struck after two bystanders ran to the aid of the man, the child and the horse. The horse was reportedly euthanized. The name of the victim wasn't immediately released.==========Wichita Man Drowns While Trying to Retrieve BoatEL DORADO, Kan. (AP) — A 29-year-old Wichita man has drowned while trying to retrieve a boat at El Dorado Lake. The Butler County Sheriff says a dive team used sonar equipment to find the body of Oscar Rodriguez Vargas Friday evening.
  • Citizenship Proof Law Holds Off Unaffiliated VotersTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A majority of the prospective Kansas voters whose registrations were put on hold after the state began enforcing a proof-of-citizenship law claim no political affiliation. An Associated Press computer analysis this week shows that 57 percent of the registrations put on hold since the law took effect in January were from people listing themselves as unaffiliated.=====Sterling Woman Sentenced in Feedlot EmbezzlementWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A central Kansas woman has been sentenced to two years of probation for embezzling more than $211,000 from a feedlot where she worked to pay off losses from her own cattle trading. The U.S. Attorney's office says 37-year-old Carrie Frederick of Sterling must also pay about $80,000 in restitution under the sentence she received yesterday (FRI) in federal court. Frederick pleaded guilty in June to wire fraud.=====Dodge City College Breaks Ground on New DormDODGE CITY, Kan. (AP) — Dodge City Community College is building a new men's dormitory. The Dodge City Globe reports that the new 120-bed building is scheduled to be completed by July 2014, with students moving in by fall of that year. The groundbreaking ceremony was held yesterday (FRI) morning.=====Jayhawk Memorabilia to Stay at KULAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — A 1,000-piece collection of Jayhawk memorabilia will stay at the University of Kansas Union. James and Mary Ascher of Overland Park, Kansas have donated $130,000 to the KU Endowment so the union can buy the collection. Bud Jennings began collecting the memorabilia in 1939. 6News Lawrence reports the Aschers said they wanted to help Jennings while also keeping the collection on the Kansas campus.
  • Reaction to Supreme Court School Funding DecisionTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — An attorney for Kansas parents and school districts suing the state over education funding says the state Supreme Court's ruling in the case is a victory for children. Newton attorney John Robb said yesterday (FRI) he's pleased with the high court's ruling. The justices ordered the Legislature to boost two kinds of aid to school districts by July 1st.Meanwhile, Governor Sam Brownback and other Republican leaders in Kansas say a state Supreme Court ruling on public schools funding is reasonable. Brownback said yesterday (FRI) he was pleased with the court's ruling in a lawsuit filed by parents and school districts.==========State Fire Marshal to Help with Fire Outbreak InvestigationHAYS, Kan. (AP) — An investigator from the Kansas fire marshal's office will help investigate an outbreak of fires in a rural northwestern county. The Hays Daily News reports the Ellis County Rural Fire Department responded Thursday night to five fires set in four hours outside the Hays city limits. Rural Fire Director Dick Klaus said the first call involved a burning pile of trees.==========Library Book Returned after 32 YearsLAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — More than two decades after a cookbook was checked out of a Kansas library, it's just now been returned. 6NewsLawrence reports a copy of "The Versatile Grain and the Elegant Bean: A Celebration of the World's Most Healthful Foods" was placed in a Lawrence Public Library return box one night this week. The book had been checked out on September 24th, 1992.
