  • (Photo credit: Wikimedia Commons)TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The victim in a fatal weekend shooting in Topeka has been identified as a Wichita woman who had been married just hours earlier. Police on Tuesday released the identity of 42-year-old Tiffany Davenport-Ray. She was shot about 1:30 am Sunday at an intersection south of downtown Topeka and died several hours later at a hospital. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that a 30-year-old man arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder had his bond set at $1 million during a court appearance Tuesday. Police said earlier that officers who responded to the shooting also found a traffic accident had occurred. A friend of the victim told the Capital-Journal that Davenport-Ray had lived in Wichita for the past 10 years working at Beechcraft and had just returned to Topeka for her wedding Saturday.
  • (Photo credit: Flickr user misobeno)TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A national gun-control group says it is planning to challenge a Kansas law declaring that the federal government has no authority to regulate guns manufactured, sold and kept only in the state. The Washington-based Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence announced Monday that it would file a federal lawsuit Wednesday against the state law. The Kansas law was enacted in 2013 and makes it a felony for any U.S. government employee to attempt to enforce a federal regulation or treaty when it comes to Kansas-only firearms, ammunition or accessories. A similar law enacted in 2009 in Montana was struck down by the federal courts. Kansas Governor Sam Brownback promised a vigorous defense of the state's law.
  • (Topeka Capitol photo via Flickr user jimmywayne)TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas legislative leaders plan to have lawmakers resolve difficult tax issues and wrap up their business this weekend. Lawmakers hoped House and Senate tax negotiators would resume talks Thursday. GOP leaders have been unable to agree on adjusting the sales tax to head off budget shortfalls while the state cuts income taxes further. But House Majority Leader Jene Vickrey told other GOP lawmakers Thursday that it's time for lawmakers to work through the weekend to finish the year's business. The 6.3 percent sales tax is set by law to drop to 5.7 percent in July. An adjustment would be tied to cuts in personal income taxes. Lawmakers also are working on the next state budget of about $14.5 billion. Thursday was the 97th day of the Legislature's annual session.
