(AP) — The National Weather Service says fierce storms are likely Saturday in a band running through the middle of the nation from Texas north to Minnesota. The Norman, Oklahoma-based Storm Prediction Center's predictions were highlighted when a twister touched down nearby Friday afternoon. Norman Regional Hospital spokeswoman Kelly Wells says about 10 people were treated for "bumps and bruises. The tornado was part of a large storm system expected to pass through the nation's midsection Saturday and Saturday night.==============================One Western KS Tornado Causes No Significant DamageWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — The National Weather Service is reporting that a tornado was on the ground for about half an hour in a rural area in southwest Kansas. But meteorologist Mike Scott says there have been no reports of significant damage. The tornado developed on the Ford and Hodgeman county line north of Dodge City. The closest it came to Dodge City was about 10 miles. ==============================Weather Outlook Prompts Schools to Move Proms to Other LocationsWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Saturday's threat of powerful tornadoes has administrators at some Kansas high schools taking no chances with student safety. KSNW-TV reports at least three high schools in south-central Kansas are moving their Saturday night proms to safer locations. Goddard High School's prom had been planned for a hall in Wichita. But principal Doug Birdwell says administrators decided Friday to hold it in the school itself, where students can take shelter in safe rooms if needed. Maize and Valley Center high schools are also moving their proms to buildings with FEMA storm shelters. Those measures would make sense to residents of Hoisington, where a massive tornado struck without warning on April 21st, 2001. Students attending prom at Hoisington High School huddled in the basement as the twister tore the roof off the building.==============================KS Air Base Moves Expensive Tankers Due to Risk of Large HailWICHITA, Kan. Officials say a large area spanning from Minnesota to Texas could be at risk. (AP) — A predicted shortfall in the Kansas budget looms over Republican Governor Sam Brownback's close re-election race as he and Democratic challenger Paul Davis scramble for votes in the final days of their heated campaign. Davis started a swing into western Kansas yesterday (SAT) at a coffee shop in the Aggieville bar-and-restaurant district near the Kansas State University campus in Manhattan. He's pressed his argument that massive personal income taxes enacted at Brownback's urging have wrecked the state's finances. Brownback started his day in southeast Kansas on a state GOP bus tour meant to persuade voters that the state is on the right path economically even if it faces short-term budget challenges. The state reported Friday that tax collections in October fell $23 million short of expectations.=========Orman Dismisses Flap Over 'Clown' CommentSHAWNEE, Kan. (AP) — Independent candidate for U.S. Senate Greg Orman says a Republican accusation that he called former Kansas Senator Bob Dole a "clown" is a distortion of his words. Orman is in a tight race with three-term Republican Senator Pat Roberts, who was traveling Friday with New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, Indiana Governor Mike Pence and Dole. Asked about a potential Republican organizational edge in the tight Senate race, Orman said Friday: "It sort of seems like a Washington establishment clown car to me. Every day a new person comes out of that car." Roberts' campaign released a statement calling Orman's comment "personal attacks and disdain for Senator Dole." Orman says he is "outraged" and calls Roberts' claim "distorting my words." Orman said Saturday that Dole is "a great example of bipartisanship."=========For a Man Without a Party, Turnouts is Big TestOVERLAND PARK, Kansas (AP) — Independent candidate Greg Orman has been running a competitive race for the Senate in Kansas, but he's now facing a major challenge: getting his supporters to the polls without an established get-out-the-vote operation. Orman's opponent, Republican Senator Pat Roberts, has the benefit of a large GOP turnout apparatus that includes four phone banks and several thousand workers and volunteers. Orman, campaigning without a party behind him, has assembled a smaller group of volunteers to make sure his likely supporters cast their ballots. They will be using a database of registered independents, who are considered most likely to back him. The suburban Kansas City businessman became the top challenger after the Democrat in the race dropped out. Roberts, a three-term incumbent, maintains that Orman is a closet liberal Democrat.
  • Kobach Seeks Expanded PowerTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach says that next year he'll revive a proposal to give his office the power to prosecute election fraud cases. Kobach pushed the idea after taking office in 2011, but his efforts to win legislative approval of the idea fell just short of passage two years later, even though fellow Republicans control the Legislature. Kobach won re-election this month with 59 percent of the vote. He persuaded legislators to enact a 2012 law requiring all voters to show photo identification at the polls, and a 2013 statute requiring new voters to provide proof of their U.S. citizenship to register. But the secretary of state's office can't initiate election fraud prosecutions on its own. Such decisions are left to county or federal prosecutors.==========Alco Stores to Close Following BankruptcyDALLAS (AP) — Small-town discount retailer Alco Stores will close after a U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Dallas approved an order by the company's creditors to shutter its stores. The company was established in 1901 and grew to operate 198 stores in 23 states in the central U.S. It sells home furnishings, outdoor products, electronics, sporting goods and clothing. Alco had $474 million in net sales in its latest fiscal year. Bond was set yesterday (FRI) at $250,000 for Cornell McNeal during his first court appearance on charges stemming from the November 14 attack. The 26-year-old Wichita man also was charged with rape and arson after allegedly setting fires at the park and at a garage on that same day. The Sedgwick County Public Defender's Office says it has not yet assigned him a lawyer, and a woman who answered the phone at his house declined to comment. Firefighters were responding to a late-night grass fire at Fairmount Park when they found the 36-year-old victim with severe burns on more than half her body.=========New Baker President Lynne Murray Sworn InBALDWIN CITY, Kan.
