  • IRVING, Texas (AP) — Big 12 schools will split up a record $252 million in revenue, the ninth year in a row of increases. The revenue total for the 10 schools was revealed yesterday (FRI) at the end of the conference's spring meetings. Kansas and Kansas State will get average full shares of about $25.6 million for the 2015 to 2016 academic year.
  • President Bush proposes adding up to 6,000 National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexican border to curb illegal immigration, as well as creating a temporary or "guest" worker program. The president delivered a speech on immigration in a live address Monday.
  • President Bush tells the nation in televised Oval Office speech on illegal immigration that "America can be a lawful society, and a welcoming society." The president plans to send 6,000 troops to help tighten the U.S.-Mexico border. But he also called again for a guest-worker program.
  • The Kansas House today (THUR) rejected a bill that would have made permanent last year’s sales tax increase. Last session, the Legislature increased the state sales tax from 5.3 to 6.3 percent, for a period of three years. The bill in the House would have kept the higher sales tax rate and lowered personal and corporate income tax rates. Representative Ann Mah (“maw”), a Topeka Democrat, said the sales tax increase should stay temporary. 00000184-7fa7-d6f8-a1cf-7fa7927d0000Supporters of the legislation said lowering the income tax rates would help spur economic growth in Kansas. The House also rejected a bill that would have repealed the 1-cent sales tax increase.

(AP) — Kansas crops and pastures are mostly faring better in the wake of heavy rain that brought much-needed moisture to arid western sections but swamped some fields elsewhere. The National Agricultural Statistics Service reported Monday that supplies of stock water improved, but remain short to very short in 26 percent of Kansas. Pastures remain in poor to very poor shape across 39 percent of the state. Corn condition is 26 percent poor to very poor, 33 percent fair, 35 percent good and 6 percent excellent. Sorghum is rated as 15 percent poor to very poor, 36 percent fair, 43 percent good and 6 percent excellent. About 9 percent of soybeans remain in poor to very poor condition, with 29 percent rated fair, 54 percent good and 8 percent excellent.
  • A federal grand jury has indicted Peter Navarro on two counts of contempt of Congress. He failed to comply with a subpoena from the Jan. 6 committee. Two other Trump aides won't face the same charges.
  • The Lawrence Old-Fashioned Christmas Parade normally features dozens of human and horse participants from across the region. The Dec. 6 event is now canceled because of the virus outbreak affecting eight states.
