Storms could bring high winds and flash flooding today (MON) and tonight to parts of central and eastern Kansas. Kris Sanders, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Topeka, says there’s a risk of property damage associated with the storms.
“Some of those thunderstorms could have the risk that some of them could put down some hail the size of quarters. You also could have damaging winds up to 60 miles per hour,” says Sanders.
Sanders says tornadoes are unlikely with these storms, but heavy rainfall is expected.
“We could get rainfall rates maybe around an inch to two inches per hour. So you could have an area receive two to three inches in a very short time period,” says Sanders.
Low-lying areas and creeks are most susceptible to flooding. Sanders reminds people to stay away from flood waters and cautions motorists to never drive through areas where running water crosses the roadway.
