StoryCorps: Legacy of Brown v. Board in Topeka (Carol & Susan Christensen)

Susan Christensen and her mother, Carol Christensen, talk about Susan's experiences in school as a student and a teacher.

Last year marked the 60th anniversary of "Brown v. Board," the Supreme Court decision declaring segregated schools unconstitutional. To commemorate the occasion, the Kansas Humanities Council partnered with NPR's StoryCorps project to interview Topeka area residents about growing up in the town so closely associated with the case. In today's installment of our local StoryCorps series, we hear Carol Christensen interview her daughter, Susan, about her experiences as both a student and teacher.

That's Carol and Susan Christensen, mother and daughter, talking about moving to Topeka in 1979. They took part in a StoryCorps project last year, marking the 60th anniversary of Brown v. Board. KPR has been sharing several of these conversations taped in Topeka. You'll find more of them on our website.

This local StoryCorps project was sponsored by the Kansas Humanities Council in cooperation with the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library and the Brown v. Board National Historic Site.
