Boeing Leaving Wichita, Reducing Workers

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Boeing's long history in Wichita has come down to a small crew tying up a few loose ends. Some employees are finalizing the move of the equipment and closing out programs. When they are done in July, Boeing will have fewer than a dozen workers maintaining the company's facilities until they are sold. The Wichita Eagle reports Boeing had been a fixture in Wichita since 1927 and at its peak employed 40,000 people. But in January 2012, Boeing said it would close its Wichita facilities and move the work to Oklahoma City, San Antonio and the Puget Sound area in Washington. Boeing spokeswoman Yvonne Johnson-Jones says the transfer of work is about 95 percent complete.
