Last week, the Air Force announced that McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita will become the main operating base for a new series of air refueling tankers. That will mean investment and jobs at McConnell. Some Kansans have worried that efficiency efforts in the military could lead to cutbacks or even closure of the base. But members of the Kansas congressional delegation, including Congressman Mike Pompeo of Wichita, say the decision shows that McConnell isn't likely to face cutbacks in the near future.
The next-generation KC-46A tankers are scheduled to arrive at the base in 2016.
