In 2008, New York Times reporter Joe Drape visited the town of Smith Center, Kansas, to find out more about its powerhouse high school football team. The result was the best-selling book "Our Boys: A Perfect Season on the Plains with the Smith Center Redmen." Now, Drape has written another book about the importance of team, community and leadership...this time, focusing on the football team that plays for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He told KPR's Laura Lorson that it was his five-year-old son, Jack, who sparked his interest in the cadets who play for the Army, and are the subject of the book "Soldiers First."
Joe Drape's latest book is called "Soldiers First: Duty, Honor, Country and Football at West Point." He's also the author of "Our Boys." He spoke with KPR's Laura Lorson. Joe Drape speaks tonight (TUE) at White Concert Hall on the Washburn University campus at 7 o'clock, as part of the Washburn "Our Boys" iRead project for this year. A book-signing will follow at 8 p.m. For more information, visit washburn.edu.
