Computer Upgrade to Shutter DMV May 1-7

The Department of Motor Vehicles will install a new computer system during the first week of May. State authorities say that means the agency won't be able to provide some services from May 1st through the 7th. Director of Motor Vehicles Donna Shelite (SHEE-lite) says the new computer system will be more efficient, combining three old systems into one that's new. 

 Shelite (SHEE-lite) advises that if a driver needs to get a new license tag for May, it should be done now rather than later. County treasurer's officials won't be able to access the necessary systems during the first week of May.

  DMV Warns of Coming Shut Down During Computer Upgrade

 There will be a bit of a hiccup in motor vehicle license and registration services in the first week of May. Officials are transferring millions of records from the existing computer system to a brand new one. State Motor Vehicles director Donna Shelite (SHEE-lite) says that will mean drivers license and vehicle registration stations throughout Kansas will be shut down from May 1st through the 7th. 

Otherwise, Shelite (SHEE-lite) says, temporary papers will be issued until the license offices re-open on May 8th. The same policy will be in effect for vehicle registrations. The Motor Vehicle Department estimates it will take about 100 continuous hours to transfer the 6.8 million registration records to the new consolidated computer system.
