Former U.S. Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell will deliver the annual Dole Lecture at the University of Kansas this semester. The lecture is set for Wednesday, April 4 at 7:30pm at the Dole Institute of Politics. The event is free and open to the public. Institute Director Bill Lacy said Mitchell is an exemplary public servant and a perfect guest. Most recently, Mitchell served as U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Peace. Mitchell was appointed to the U.S. Senate in 1980 to complete the unexpired term of Senator Ed Muskie. He was elected to a full term in the Senate in 1982 in a come-from-behind victory. Mitchell went on to a career in the Senate spanning 15 years. He left the Senate in 1995 as the Senate majority leader, a position he had held since January 1989.
