Emporia Police Chief Resigns

EMPORIA, Kan. (AP) — Emporia's chief of police has resigned. The Emporia Gazette reports that Police Chief Gary Smith resigned Friday afternoon. City Manager Matt Zimmerman not say why Smith resigned because it's the city's policy not to discuss personnel matters.

Union State Chairman Resigns

 

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The chairman of the board of Kansas City's Union Station is stepping down from that position. Mike Haverty announced his plans to leave the position Friday. He has led Union Station since 2005. Bob Regnier, the president at the Bank of Blue Valley, was elected to succeed him as chairman of the board.

Hawker Beechcraft Honors Longest-Working Employee

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Hawker Beechcraft has honored its longest-serving employee, who started working at the company's Wichita's plant when Harry S. Truman was president. Marvin Abbott retired from Hawker Beechcraft on Friday after 61 years with the company. He turns 80 in November. Abbott started on the factory floor in 1951 pushing a hand truck for less than a dollar an hour. He rose to serve in management for 37 years.

Wichita Hospital Halts Transplants

A Wichita hospital has suspended its kidney transplant program after discovering that four of its recent patients have died.  The Wichita Eagle reports that officials at Via Christi Hospitals say that a transplanted kidney in a fifth patient failed.  Hospital officials say a preliminary review of the deaths and organ failure has not shown any common cause, but an internal investigation continues.
