7-Vote Win Leads to Election Recount

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Election officials in south-central Kansas will recount the votes in a Democratic legislative primary won by the incumbent with a seven vote margin. Challenger Erich Bishop of Hutchinson asked Reno County yesterday to recount the votes in the 102nd House District. Bishop is trying to unseat Representative Jan Pauls, also from Hutchinson. Pauls is a conservative Democrat who has served in the Legislature since 1991. The final tally from August 7th showed Pauls beating Bishop 427-420.

No Recount Requested in Election Tie

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas officials say neither candidate has asked for a recount in a Democratic legislative primary that ended in a tie. Tom Brungardt of Milford, and Melody Saxton of Junction City each received 206 votes in the August 7th primary for the 65th Kansas House District. However Brungardt and Saxton did not request a recount by yesterday's deadline, so the State Board of Canvassers will decide their primary by drawing lots or flipping a coin.
