KS Gov Tries to Make the Case for Higher Ed Funding

Governor Sam Brownback (File Photo, Courtesy of Stephen Koranda)

Governor Sam Brownback continues his tour of state universities and colleges today (THUR), making stops at the KU Medical Center and Kansas City, Kansas Community College. Brownback wants to highlight the role higher education plays in the state's economy. He's also hoping to protect state schools from budget cuts proposed by lawmakers, who would like to trim as much as 4 percent from university budgets.

The difference in funding proposals has caused a divide between the conservative governor and conservative legislative leaders. House Speaker Ray Merrick says House members are committed to higher education, but they believe there's room to find savings in university budgets. Brownback continues his tour tomorrow (FRI), with stops at Washburn University and Emporia State.
