Kansas Lawmakers to Hold Meeting on Tyson Plant Proposal

Kansas lawmakers from the Leavenworth County area will address questions Friday about a chicken facility planned for outside Tonganoxie. The proposed $320 million Tyson plant could process more than 1 million chickens per week.

Jen Peak is a Tonganoxie resident who’s opposed to the plan. However, she says the meeting will be helpful for anyone interested in the project, which could include people outside Leavenworth County.

“This project ultimately is going to impact a very large area. I think that’s something that a lot of people aren’t aware of at this point,” says Peak.

The meeting is at 6:30 at Chieftain Park in Tonganoxie.

Opponents of the plan have raised concerns about pollution, odors and an influx of people that would stress the area’s infrastructure. Supporters have said it’s a big economic development opportunity that would create more than 1500 jobs.
