Any child who’s been taken from their home has been through something traumatic. Kids often react with behavior that’s confusing and sometimes frightening for foster parents and adoptive families. In Kansas, the child welfare system is critically strained and the therapy some kids need is often interrupted. Madeline Fox of the Kansas News Service has this look at some of the problems in the state’s foster care system.

The Kansas News Service is a collaboration covering health, education, and politics across the state. This year, the Kansas News Service is documenting the failings of the child welfare system in Kansas, and what’s being done to fix it as the Department for Children and Families is revamped and a legislative task force searches for solutions.

The Kansas News Service produces essential enterprise reporting, diving deep and connecting the dots in tracking the policies, issues and and events that affect the health of Kansans and their communities. The team is based at KCUR and collaborates with public media stations and other news outlets across Kansas. Kansas News Service stories and photos may be republished at no cost with proper attribution and a link back to kcur.org. The Kansas News Service is made possible by a group of funding organizations, led by the Kansas Health Foundation.
