Super Duper Sports Knowledge - January 31, 2020

Q: On Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs face the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV (54) in Miami. Also on Sunday, a native Kansan will become the first woman to ever coach in the Super Bowl. What's the name of this assistant coach for the 49ers and what's the name of her Kansas hometown?

A: Katie Sowers / Hesston

On Sunday, February 2, native Kansan Katie Sowers will become the first woman to coach in the Super Bowl. She's one of three women who have full-time coaching jobs in the NFL. The other two work for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Sowers is an offensive assistant coach on the staff of 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. She was born in Hesston in 1986. In addition to coaching at the Super Bowl, the 33-year-old Sowers will appear in a Microsoft commercial that will air during the big game. Sowers credits Scott Pioli, the former general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs, for some of her professional success. The two had a chance encounter years ago in Kansas City and became friends. She still considers him a mentor.

Fun Factoid: Even though Sowers coaches for the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl opponent, Sowers has the Kansas City skyline tattooed around the word “home” on her left arm.
