Q: In 1949, a man from Hutchinson named H.O. Stockwell visited the Ellis Peck farm, a few miles east of Greensburg, in Kiowa County, Kansas. It was there that Stockwell discovered something big and heavy. He sold it to the people of Greensburg, where it remains on display today. What is it? (And be specific!)

A: a pallasite meteorite, one of the largest of its kind in the world!
Weighing in at 1,000 pounds, this pallasite meteorite was discovered on a farm in Kiowa County, Kansas, in 1949. It's believed to be one of the largest of its kind in the world. We'd love to show you a photograph, but would rather have you see it for yourself. It's on display at the Big Well Museum in Greensburg, which is believed to be the world's largest hand dug well. When completed in 1888, the well was 109 feet deep and 32 feet in diameter. You can see two of the world's largest things in one stop when you visit Greensburg, a town full of free parking and friendly folks! Learn more at BigWell.org.
