Q: Winding through the city of Topeka is a little river called the Shunganunga Creek. The name of this creek comes from an Indian word meaning what?
A: race course
The Shunganunga Creek meanders through the city of Topeka and eventually meets up with the Kansas River. The name Shunganunga comes from an Indian word meaning “race course.” A paved, multi-use pathway, called the Shunga Trail, roughly follows the course of the creek. The trail begins at Crestview Park (near 27th and Fairlawn) in Topeka and continues east (to 10th and Adams) running through city parks, grassy meadows and forested woodlands. The trail is popular with cyclists, skaters and those just taking a stroll.
